I just realized it’s been over 6 years since I haven’t had a smartphone for work. On the plus side, I never come in to 50 pointless emails. OTOH, I get to go to bed every night dreading the morning.

I have my emails on my phone but I ignore them for the most part. With a lot of my tasks they can’t be done outside banking and trading hours anyways.

Because I’m two hours behind, there are mornings when I wake up to 50 emails and growing. I feel obligated to pay attention because my youngest employees think everything is urgent and they’ll annoy the shit out of everyone at corporate if they don’t get an answer from me. For a generation that grew up with Google, they’re sure terrible at using it.

I’m 23 but understand both sides. I like a quick repsonse but now people are busy. If it gets put in one of my holding files that’s fine. The ball is in their court. Also, 90% of SAP T Code questions can be solved via google.

Nice — always good to have an outside force constraining your hours. Ours can be 24/7 if we let it.

And some of them do...

IN a ways I can prepare stuff for banking and trading hours but... nah. My coworkers who depend on me are relaxed and now everyone is busy/everything is bad enough anyways whats the problem with a few more.

Sounds like they need a little bit of training on how to use email more appropriately, actually.

I just switched from an HQ role where most of the people I dealt with were in Europe (6-8 hours ahead) to a role where no one is more than an hour ahead of me. It’s super nice not having too many emails waiting for me in the morning...

I mean, they’re usually somewhat legitimate questions (from their perspective) but there are definitely other ways to find answers, especially since I’m not working at 9 am their time.

We write environmental reports but need to know more than most 23-year-old women know about mechanical systems for buildings. I’ll get photos of elevator equipment asking me “what fuels these boilers?”

...so I sigh, add another shot of whiskey to the morning coffee, and answer because god knows what the draft will look like otherwise.

Well, it’s great that they’re asking the question, that’s true. They also need to be a little more resourceful, it sounds - and not pester when they don’t get the answer within 9 seconds.

And - bourbon - it’s not just for breakfast anymore!
